Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding.
Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime. --A.T. Hurley

For people with cancer, one has to undergo a series of treatment for their condition. And treatment such as chemotherapy can have side effect on one's body. For women with issues such as breast cancer, chemotherapy drugs can cause hair to grow thin, and for more serious cases, hair can fall off completely. And for women, hair loss can be a distressing thing to happen. The harsh impact on body, health, and image for a women suffering from cancer can be a big blow to handle with.
Hair loss for women with cancer may be inevitable, hence one should not let it be a burden on one's shoulder. Rather we should look at ways to improve on the condition. One thing we must understand is that hair loss may be just temporary. For some people, hair starts to grow back 3 weeks after chemotherapy. Hair can grow back when we improve on our condition, that is why one should not fall into depression just because of hair loss but foster the energy on recovery and improvement to the condition.
If you feel that your hair starts to grow thin when you begin on chemotherapy treatment, you can try the following to prevent excessive hair loss. Try using gentle or mild shampoo and conditioner for your hair. You should also use a cool hair dryer instead of hot air and comb your hair more gently to avoid breakage. You can also cut your hair short to give the appearance of thicker volume. Also, avoid direct sunlight or heated rollers on your hair or perming your hair as it is very fragile during these times.
Hair may start falling out 3 weeks after the first chemotherapy treatment, and it usually happens quite quickly. Usually for some women, they realized they are having hair loss when the hair starts clogging the drain after shower, or for others, they might notice a lot of hair around the pillow when they woke up. For some people, they would rather shave off the rest of the hair and for others, one may try to wear a cloth around the head to cover up the signs of hair loss.
As image can be important for one, one can try getting a wig during the period of hair loss. Wig can help to boost one's confidence by giving a person a better image during the time of illness. But if you are not ready for a wig or find it to hot for you in a warm climate, you can also use a hat or scarf instead. They are equally useful to help a woman with imaging.
Hair is an important part of our identity and image. But it does not mean you do not look good without your hair. With make up and dressing, you can still look equally beautiful. So do not stress yourself too much if you are losing hair, and just whatever that makes you feel good. If you feel down or sad during such times, just talk with your family members or seek a support group for comfort. With support from others, you will definitely have the confidence to face the challenges. With this positive mindset, you are well on your way to recovery from your condition and gaining your hair back.

We all know that regular exercise in important for fitness but very few of us do it. Even when we begin an exercise program it is all to often neglected after a few weeks.
Women are especially vulnerable to this syndrome. We start a fitness program in the New Year when we have put on the pounds over the holiday season then by the time we come to our summer holidays it is long forgotten. When we come to put on our swimming costumes again we are overcome with shame at the sight of our bodies.
That is part of the problem. So many women have a poor self image. They feel bad about their bodies. The fact that there are beautiful movie and pop stars who have lovely svelte bodies just makes us feel worse. How can we ever keep up with them?
Well let's face it we can't and don't want to. Real women have lives that do not revolve around their looks. We have jobs, family responsibilities, active social lives and all kinds of commitments and interests. Real women are not babes.
So we have to start from a realistic perspective about our own bodies and what we expect from an exercise program. That does not mean being timid about exercise. Lot's of women avoid weight training and resistance work because they think it will give them bulging muscles.
This is not the case. Women do not develop huge muscle mass even when they work out with weights. But weights and resistance work will help to hone a woman's body and make it look more trim and toned.
Cardiovascular work is also important for women. It helps to maintain a healthy heart and circulation. That will enable you to cope better with all the demands that everyday life places on you as a woman.
Interval training in which you increase your heart rate to 75-80% of its maximum and then let it drop down to 50-60% is a good way of increasing your cardiovascular capacity. Heart disease is not just a problem for men it is an under recognized issue in women.
Long term exercise can help you to avoid a whole number of health issues. It has been shown that exercise can reduce the risk of suffering from senile dementia. More women suffer from dementia than men because they tend to live longer. The risk of osteoporosis is also reduced by exercise. Really working the muscles as in weight training puts demands on the bones that keeps them strong.
If weight loss is your aim then remember that we burn at lot of calories by maintaining a comparatively low level of activity over a long period. Walking briskly is often better than running for weight loss.
An exercise program alone will seldom produce much weight loss. About 4 ounces a week is the average. To achieve a higher level it is necessary to combine exercise with a weight loss diet. But exercise will boost your metabolic rate.
As your produce more lean muscle in relation to fat so you will burn more calories. A pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat. So a lean woman burns more calories when they are just sitting on the sofa than a woman who is carrying a lot of fat.
Perhaps the most important benefit of exercise for women is that it improves mood and self confidence. Many women suffer from depression and anxiety. Exercise has been shown to boost serotonin the brain chemical that lifts our mood and makes us feel good.
Knowing that we can lift weights or run for miles contributes to a sense of self esteem. Regular exercise puts women in control of their own bodies which is an important factor in boosting confidence. So put aside your fears about exercise and get to work on planning our a daily exercise program.
